Глава 11
Умолчание - отличный прием перевода

Стиль научного русского языка характеризуется известной многословностью. Буквальное следование оригиналу создает эффект «сверхперевода». Вполне нормальная фраза «применяя приведенные выше результаты, нетрудно проверить, что верна Теорема 1» при неуместном старании в переводе и пунктуации звучит: "On using the results, stated above, for one it is easy to prove, that the theorem, numbered 1, is true." Разумеется, так писать нельзя. Достаточно сказать что-то простое в стиле: "By above results, Theorem 1 is readily available." Можно выбрать еще более далекий от оригинала вариант "Theorem 1 is now easy." Впрочем, лапидарность может разозлить Вашего редактора.

По аналогичному поводу С. Гоулд отмечает:

"Every language contains many words and expressions that are originally meaningful but have been used so often that the reader is scarcely aware of their presence. If translated literally (and very often it is hard to translate them in any other way) they are already overtranslated. A good example is the Russian phrase «как известно», often translated "as is known" or (usually somewhat better) by "as is well known". But in many cases the author is referring to a mathematical fact which is indeed sufficiently well known that to call it so in English becomes absurd and we must use some phrase as "of course" or "naturally" or "obviously" or some other "slight" English word, or perhaps nothing at all."

Принцип умолчания Вам следует применять ко всем русским сложноподчиненным (и сложносочиненным) предложениям с многочисленными «что» и «который». Говоря формально, при переводе вполне может быть опущена (= допускает умолчание) структура подчинения предложений. В подобных случаях исходное сложное предложение превращается в несколько простых.

Многие умолчания уместны при замене русских лексических конструкций, играющих роли артиклей и иных определителей в английском языке. Скажем, описания в выражениях типа «упомянутое выше условие», «введенное нами соглашение», «некоторая произвольная функция» и т. п. исчезают в переводе, оставляя своими следами подходящие артикли.

В своем общем значении умолчание подразумевает краткость изложения. Обстоятельный справочник, трактующий вопросы подобного рода, - книга R. H. Fiske, Guide to Concise Writing.

Использование принципа умолчания - важный элемент улучшения стиля перевода.
